We over at
CROWN NINE have been curating super limited edition jewelry designed exclusively for the shop, as a way of connecting jewelry lovers with the most unique and special pieces we can get our hands on. We also are touring the studios of our local artists with photographer
EVA KOLENKO to get a peek into their world, design process, and personality. It all adds up to getting a start-to-finish understanding of where our objects come from, because we wholeheartedly believe that
beautiful things made by real people make for a better world.
Back in April I accompanied Eva to the studio of Derek McKay Duncan, the goldsmith genius behind DMD Metals.
We've carried Derek's work in the shop because I have a major design crush on him. His work is interesting and unusual, drawing upon his love of graffiti and geometry, but totally refined and crafted with the utmost craft and attention to detail.
Here are the 'Beholder' hoops that Derek made for A Rarity, only 10 available. They are exquisitely crafted, using only cold connections to blend the silver and gold together.

His studio/ live space was likewise inspiring, a huge open loft space that he shares with four other artists, each a master in different mediums. Here are some of my outtakes from behind the scenes of that day:
